How it works on Greenhouse

Hosted and embedded boards. A job on boards.greenhouse.io is one case. The other is a company careers page with a Greenhouse form inside it, named by a gh_jid number in the address. A company’s board index, the list of all its openings, is not treated as a job.
The résumé parser rewrites your details. Greenhouse reads the résumé you attach and rewrites Phone and Location a few seconds later. The agent checks both after the parser has run and puts your profile values back if the parser changed them. The phone format follows the country chip on the form.
Location is a city search. The Location field searches cities. If your profile names a country but no city, searching the country picks a random place that shares its name, so the agent leaves the field for you instead of guessing.
Custom dropdowns. Many Greenhouse questions are custom dropdowns rather than plain selects. The agent opens each one, reads the options and picks from what is listed, then checks that the choice stuck.
Cover letter. An optional cover letter upload is left blank unless your setting "Also answer optional essays and cover letters" is on. A required one is handled through the text entry Greenhouse reveals behind the upload.
Role-pinned questions. A question like "Are you authorized to work in this country?" refers to the role’s location. The agent takes the role’s location from the posting’s own data, so those questions are judged against the role and not against where you live.

What stays with you

Questions that are yours to answer stay with you: legal and compliance disclosures, consent to arbitration, sharing your résumé with third parties, interview recording and text messages, and any citizenship, work authorization or age answer your profile does not hold. A demographic question your profile does not answer takes the form’s own decline option.
